Is the rate at which mobile broadband device and application usage growing going to render LTE yesterday's technology before it's even deployed?  Given the relatively lukewarm reception that 3G picocells have received, will their 4G equivalent save the day?  Will Microsoft's White-Fi project present new wireless competition for mobile operators?  This presentation will review mobile broadband demand drivers and projections and detail the network architectures, propagation characteristics, coverage and bandwidth limitations of both licensed and unlicensed wireless spectrum and associated protocols.   Case studies will focus on specific service provider challenges, deployment scenarios and outcomes.  Technical issues addressed include:

• Understanding the impact of the decoupling of ARPU and data traffic on network CAPEX
• Addressing mobile data application growth on voice-centric networks
• Macro-cellular vs. micro-cellular network architectures for LTE
• Investigating the requirements and challenges of pico-cellular architectures
• Exploiting the complementary roles of licensed and license-free spectrum -- utilization, interference and co-existence issues
• Leveraging existing mounting, power and backhaul assets
