Management of Carrier Ethernet services is very challenging due to limited OAM capabilities within Ethernet.  Standards bodies have defined extensive Ethernet OAM capabilities over the last few years and equipment vendors have begun to implement these standards.  The implementation of Ethernet OAM to manage an enterprise or service provider network can become very complex.  Various capabilities need to be combined to give a complete picture of the state of an Ethernet service.  This proposal details the lessons learned by Verizon during extensive evaluation of the Ethernet OAM capabilities implemented at the link and service level.  It explains how Ethernet OAM can be used, what faults and degradations can and can not be detected and provides a high level view of the implementation designs.
