Since the dawn of the network age, the Internet has been wired-up from end to end, and the mobile network has been free to move about in its own innovation space. What has to change in the engineering and economics of the Internet for it to fully support mobile devices, applications, and users, and what has to happen in the mobile network for it to become free, open, and responsive to customer needs? Some of the answers are technical, but many others pertain to policy and regulation. Solutions emerging form the European Commission and from national regulatory authorities in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere. This talk highlights critical regulatory roadblocks standing in the way of a pervasive, highly functional and economically sustainable Mobile Internet that doesn't require taxpayer subsidy to operate.
