Presentation Tips
The following is a brief outline of suggestions for your presentation. Downloaded the Speaker's Manual for requirements and deadlines.SESSION FORMAT
Keynote speakers Keynotes have approximately 45-minutes per presentation. This allows time for introductions, up to 25-30 minutes per presentation and 10-15 minutes for Q&A.
Single Speaker Track sessions Sessions are approximately 30 minutes in length. This allows 15-20 minutes per presentation and 5-10 minutes for Q&A.
Panel Discussions Panels are 90 minutes. Each speaker will have up to 20 minutes to deliver a prepared presentation, once all speakers are complete, remaining time will be used for audience Q&A
Beer & Pizza Shootout Beer & Pizza is 120 minutes. There are no formal presentations, all time is reserved for moderator led Q&A.
PLEASE DO NOT RUN OVER. Please be courteous of this as there are other speakers after you and your audience will need time to get to their next session.
AUDIO/VISUAL
All rooms will be equipped with an overhead projector and LCD data projector. Please make your audio/visual aids as professional looking as possible. We suggest you use Microsoft PowerPoint or have your slides or transparencies prepared professionally. Note that you will have to supply your own laptop computer to show PowerPoint slides. If you have special requirements please contact or submit them to the Conference Administrator.
MODERATORS & PANELISTS:
A contact list of
the respective moderator and panelists will be
given to everyone. The Moderators should contact
their respective panelists and go over the
details of their session prior to the
conference.

Helpful Tips
The most common complaint from the attendees: The Presentation was too much a “Company sales pitch”. Please limit your presentation to the industry and its technology. Note that there will be an “Introduction to MPLS” tutorial on Monday, so we assume that most attendees will have at least a basic understanding of MPLS prior to the general conference. Past experience has shown us that most attendees are from a technical background so please try and avoid “introductory” presentations.
Your entire presentation appears in the conference proceedings, and your oral presentation should describe its highlights and progress since it was written, as well as any future plans.
Answering Questions:
Before answering a question please ensure that everyone in the audience knows what it is. Repeat questions if necessary. Be particularly careful if the questioner is near the front of the room. Then answer the question concisely and directly. Please try to restrict your answer to about two minutes.
Basic Organization:
The most significant constraint is the time limit. In 3 to 5 minutes you can probably speak about 300 to 500 words–at a moderate speed.
The time limit also restricts how many concepts or major technical points you can make and expect your audience to absorb. A good guideline is to have no more than 3 such points. Express each technical point as a declarative statement, substantiated with supporting material. Though the restriction to 3 points may seem like a hardship, it will help focus the audience’s attention on the most significant information.
Presentation Preparation Instructions
A Few Suggestions if you are going to use:
Footnotes: Use footnotes sparingly. Begin two lines from the previous text by typing a short horizontal line, using the underscore key 12 times, skip 1/2 or 1 line, type footnote symbol, then type the footnote. For example:
*Footnote symbols follow the conventional order of asterisk (*), double asterisk (**), broken line ( | ), and double broken line ( || ).
References: In the body of the paper, cite references by the author’s last name and the year of publication, all in parentheses, as in (Sharp 1993)
Organize the reference list alphabetically by author’s name, followed by his or her initials, year of publication, and other complete information about the published work. Do Not Number the List.
Cite only references a reader may obtain readily. For style and consistency, The Chicago Manual of Style will govern.
Tables and Illustrations: All artwork, figures, captions, graphics, and tables will be reproduced exactly as you submit them.
Biography: Include a 50-100 word biography with your presentation. This allows readers to become familiar with the presenter’s background.
Note: PLEASE include slide numbers on your slides so the publisher can keep the slides in the order that you present them.
